A reflection on my journey with Vitiligo

I was recently invited to appear on the popular Mexican podcast VITITALKS. I had the honour of sharing my journey with Vitiligo, the importance of building community and how I have made it my life’s mission to raise social awareness about living with this common, yet little know, skin condition.

Diagnosis and Early Struggles

During my recent interview, I explained that I was diagnosed with Vitiligo at 18 while studying in Spain. Initially, I struggled with my self-image and covered my skin with makeup. However, participating in a BBC documentary eight years ago marked a turning point in my life. The feedback I received was overwhelmingly positive and empowering.

Teaching and Advocacy

As a teacher in London, I used my experience to foster healthy conversations about visible differences among my students. Their encouragement inspired me to embrace my natural skin and stop using make-up to cover up. Through my social media presence and public speaking, I advocated for body positivity and better representation in the media.

The Importance of Community

I champion the importance of supportive communities and healthy conversations about our unique conditions, visible or invisible. Vitiligo is a part of my identity, and I wanted to inspire others to accept themselves and celebrate their individuality.

My message in this podcast was clear: self-acceptance is a personal journey and having a supportive community makes all the difference. I invite you to join me in this mission to empower and celebrate diversity.
