London Fashion Week 2021

Modelling as a diverse model - London Organic

Recently, I was honoured to participate in London Fashion Week and London Represents as a diverse model which celebrates the diversity of fashion in London. As someone with a visible difference, I grew up seeing very little representation when it came to diversity in the media. This is what makes me feel so passionate about events like London Fashion Week. The event was hosted at the London Arboretum which is London’s first environmentally friendly members’ club and just seemed perfect for the event.

London Organic hosted and organised the event and in the past have hosted over 100 fashion events in London since 2011. London Organic have previously used models from a diverse range of backgrounds including every colour and background, plus-size and slim, wheelchair and disabled models, transgender and non-binary and models with a visible difference like myself. London Organic quote,

‘As a company operating in the Beauty and Fashion Worlds, we have a duty to build a strong and diverse community. Clothes and beauty are important for everyone and it is important that our models reflect that. For 10 years, it has been our pleasure to showcase ethical clothes and skincare, with a diverse range of models as possible. Through addressing the lack of diversity and inclusivity that has long been felt in these industries, we hope to create a kind and innovative space-where people are allowed to be themselves.’ Saumen Kar

The event combined style with ethical and inclusive fashion by emerging British designers and I modelled some wonderful clothing by Leticia Credido who has created a beautiful range of sleepwear and loungewear. Her clothing made me feel confident, happy and empowered and it felt overwhelming walking the catwalk in her very comfortable clothing range. Two models I met also share their personal experiences with me.

‘I absolutely loved modelling Leticia’s clothing. It made me feel special knowing a designer like Leticia chose me to model for her. I felt confident and its changed my life.’ Raven Bleau (@tattooed_feline_queen)

‘So honoured to be able to walk in beautifully designed nightwear that made me feel amazing. Loved taking part in the catwalk with other diverse models.’ Cheryl Shaw (@___chezza___)

This opportunity has given people like us the opportunity be a part of the movement towards seeing more diversity through the fashion industry. It is refreshing to see how representation is on the increase and how many campaigns are now including more diverse models. What we need to realise as a society is that everyone should feel valued no matter who they are. The incorporation of diverse models is key to creating a new generation of people who can identify more with what they see in the media and identify with people who look more like them. This will hopefully allow young people to stop focusing on their insecurities and allow them to embrace themselves fully in who they are.
